Over the years, we have featured literary works of fiction and poetry. This year, we are offering you a serving of non-fiction literature. Just like how documentary films are made, non-fiction books are also a product of diligence in research and cooked thoughtfully to craft a meal based on facts of life. Writer Dr. Ferdiansyah Thajib and his colleague, Febi R. Ramadhan, Ph.D., will be discussing a work of academic literature that has been done compassionately.

Drawing on ethnographic research conducted across multiple locations in Indonesia, Enduring Otherwise (NYU Press, 2026) explores how marginalized communities grapple with everyday forms of normative violence. The book advances endurance as a mode of engaging with otherwise possibilities: an approach to living with harmful conditions while staying committed to the question of what ought to be done differently to undo them.
